No. 9 seed Veronika Kudermetova of Russia opened her 2023 Australian Open campaign with a dominant 6-2, 7-5 victory over Spain's Cristina Bucsa on Monday. Kudermetova, a quarterfinalist at last year's Wimbledon, broke Bucsa's serve six times and won 72% of her first-serve points. She will face either Anna Blinkova or Elina Avanesyan in the second round.

Vickery Upsets Kasatkina

American qualifier Sachia Vickery pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the Australian Open so far, defeating No. 8 seed Daria Kasatkina of Russia 7-6(2), 6-4. Vickery, ranked No. 128 in the world, saved three set points in the first set and broke Kasatkina's serve five times in the match. She will face either Tereza Martincova or Katie Volynets in the second round.

Osorio Advances

No. 27 seed Camila Osorio of Colombia also reached the second round with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Hungary's Panna Udvardy. Osorio broke Udvardy's serve five times and won 70% of her first-serve points. She will face either Laura Siegemund or Anastasia Potapova in the second round.
