In basketball, a flagrant foul is a severe infraction that results in an automatic free throw and possession for the opposing team. There are two types of flagrant fouls:

Flagrant Foul Penalty 1 (FFP1)

A Flagrant Foul Penalty 1 (FFP1) is assessed for unnecessary or excessive contact that occurs during live play. This type of foul does not result in an ejection from the game.

Flagrant Foul Penalty 2 (FFP2)

A Flagrant Foul Penalty 2 (FFP2) is a more serious violation that involves unnecessary or excessive contact that could injure the opponent. An FFP2 results in an immediate ejection from the game.

Consequences

Flagrant fouls can have significant consequences for both the player and the team:

• Player: The player who commits the foul may be suspended for multiple games depending on the severity of the infraction.
• Team: The team of the player who commits the foul may be penalized with a technical foul or a loss of possession.
