AGL Energy to Close Torrens Island B Power Station

Decommissioning of Fuel Oil Tanks and Tank Bases Completed

AGL Energy Limited (AGL) has today announced that it will close the Torrens Island B Power Station in South Australia by 2026. The decision was made following a comprehensive review of the station's long-term viability and the evolving energy landscape.

First Power Station in Australia to Use Piped Natural Gas

The Torrens Island Power Station was commissioned in 1966 and has played a significant role in powering South Australia homes and businesses. However, with the increasing availability of renewable energy sources and the transition to a cleaner energy grid, AGL has determined that the station is no longer economically viable.

AGL has completed the decommissioning of four fuel oil tanks and six tank bases on the Torrens Island site. This project involved the safe removal and disposal of approximately 100,000 tonnes of fuel oil and 12,000 tonnes of tank materials.

The Torrens Island Power Station was the first power station in Australia to use natural gas piped from South Australia's Cooper Basin. This innovation helped to reduce the state's reliance on imported fuels and provided a cleaner and more efficient source of electricity.
