Gritty Oilers Battle Back From 3-1 Deficit To Win Cup
The Edmonton Oilers, led by Wayne Gretzky, came back from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the New York Islanders in the 1984 Stanley Cup Finals.
The series was a back-and-forth affair, with each team winning a game on the other's home ice. The Oilers finally clinched the series in Game 5, with a 5-2 victory at Nassau Coliseum.
Gretzky was the star of the series, scoring 10 goals and adding 18 assists. He was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner as the playoff MVP.
The Oilers' victory was their first Stanley Cup championship. It was also the first time that a team from Canada had won the Cup since the Montreal Canadiens in 1979.
